FRANCHISE MEDIATION & ARBITRATION SERVICES

committed to resolution | Experience | Diligence

History

Arthur Pressman is an independent mediator and arbitrator of commercial disputes with a proven track record of helping businesses, franchisees, franchisors and investors resolve business disputes. He has 35+ years experience of representing business and franchise companies and was a franchisee himself. His approach is facilitative, respectful, tenacious and grounded in years of experience that have taught him that litigating or arbitrating a dispute – win, lose or draw – is rarely a satisfactory experience for anyone, clients and lawyers included. He’s successfully mediated countless commercial disputes, and has personal references from top lawyers throughout the country.

Arthur has trained with both JAMS and the American Arbitration Association to serve as a mediator. Since 2012, he has taught alternative dispute resolution, negotiation and professional responsibility at the Boston University School of Law. In 2018, he lectured on negotiation at Chuo University Law School, Tokyo, Japan, and in 2020, he taught negotiation at Translegal Institute in Shanghai, China. Since 2017, Arthur has participated at the IBA-VIAC Mediation & Negotiation Competition in Vienna, serving as a team coach and assessor. In 2020, he served as a judge at the International Chamber of Commerce Mediation Competition in Paris, and in 2021, he was a judge at the LEX INFINITUM Negotiation and Mediation Competition held in Goa, India. In 2006-2008, Arthur taught the business aspects of franchising in the Babson College MBA program and and in 1992 he taught franchise law at Temple University School of Law.

Most recently, in December 2022, Arthur was inducted into the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals (nadn.org) after its in-depth review of his performance as a mediator and arbitrator. In 2019, Arthur was certified as an international mediator by the International Mediation Institute (IMI) in The Hague, Netherlands. IMI is the only body setting practice standards for mediators on a global scale. Worldwide there are approximately 600 IMI certified mediators, including approximately 150 in the United States. In 2020 Arthur was named a Fellow in the Institute of Chartered Arbitrators (CIArb) in London, UK. CIArb is the world’s leading qualifications and professional body for dispute avoidance and dispute management. CIArb Fellowship is recognized as a symbol of peak professionalism, and entitles a Fellow to use the designation FCIArb. He is also a Distinguished Fellow in the International Academy of Mediators (iam.org), an international, invitation-only group of approximately 200 mediators worldwide.

During Arthur’s career as a practicing lawyer, Chambers USA consistently recognized him as among the top tier of U.S. franchise lawyers. Chambers wrote that clients described him as “the go-to guy,” a “very good litigator,” “gets things done very efficiently” and “very knowledgeable,” with “… client service [that] is great.” Recently, the International Mediation Institute certified him as meeting its rigorous standards for inclusion on its roster. Its reviewers wrote that ‘Arthur is top notch on law and understanding clients’ egos,” and that “Arthur is a class act. He not only understands the law but gets to know the people involved and their needs.” These qualities mark Arthur’s mediation and arbitration practice.

Based in Boston, Arthur is available throughout the United States and internationally for mediation and arbitration assignments. Please review his current resume from the American Arbitration Association where he is on both its mediation and arbitrator rosters.
